Davidson tops Broncs 3-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs volleyball team was topped 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-22) by the Davidson University Wildcats Saturday, Sept. 11 during the fourth match of the UTSA Classic in San Antonio, Texas.

Davidson took control of the first game of the match with an 8-0 lead. Senior Marci Logan helped UTPA tally their first point with a kill 8-1. Then, Jimena Gandara stepped up with another kill that helped the Broncs get back into the game with three straight points. During the set, UTPA was able to get within 6 points of the Wildcats 14-8, but Davidson claimed the set 25-12.

Kaitlin Vasquez helped the Broncs get game two off to a strong start with a kill, followed by three straight Wildcat errors, which gave UTPA a 4-0 advantage. Davidson fought back to take the lead and tied the game 8-8 and 9-9, but two Wildcat errors kept the Broncs on top. Eventually, a service ace by Molly Crenshaw put Davidson in the lead 14-13. The Broncs answered with points from Meghan Fichtel, Logan and Vasquez, but could not regain control. Davidson took set two 25-13.

UTPA started game three staying closely behind Davidson and took the 9-8 lead following a string of errors by the Wildcats. Later, a kill by Fichtel and two by Logan put UTPA ahead of the Wildcats 15-12; however, Davidson would not give up and stole the 21-20 lead. Fichtel added another kill for the Broncs, but the Wildcats claimed the match point 25-22.

This afternoon, the UTPA will conclude the UTSA Classic with a match against UTEP at 2 p.m. (CT).

Monday, the Broncs will be back at home when they play host to Texas State at the UTPA Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex.
