EDINBURG, Texas- The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs Volleyball team was swept (25-16, 25-14, 25-14) by the Texas State University Bobcats Monday, Sept. 13 at the UTPA Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex.
Senior Meghan Fichtel notched the first point of game one for the Broncs, but Texas State moved ahead with the early lead. UTPA was able remain close to Texas State, but the Bobcats were able to take advantage of Bronc errors near the end of the set and claimed game one 25-16.
In game two, the Broncs were able to steal the early 4-3 lead, but a kill from the Bobcats' Medline Gaffney tied 8-8 and gave Texas State the boost it was looking for. The Bobcats then followed up with a 6-0 run on the Broncs that put them ahead 17-9. Ijanae Holman stopped the Bobcats with a kill, but it was not enough to halt Texas State. The Bobcats took game two 25-14.
Once again, Fichtel got the Broncs off to a good start claiming the first point of game three, which was followed by a kill from Jimena Gandara. Texas State refused to back down, stealing the 5-4 lead and never let go. Kaitlin Vasquez and Rita Gonzalez also chipped in points to help the Broncs get back in the game, but The Bobcats claimed the match point 25-14.
"Texas State is by far the best team we have played this season. They really have a lot more depth than other opponents, but we play tough teams so that we can get ready for the conference season," head coach Angela Hubbard said. "I thought our team had good poise and confidence tonight. We know what our goals are. Obviously we do not feel great about the preseason, but this weekend we start with a clean slate, and we are focused on our Great West Conference opponents.
This weekend, the Broncs hit the road and will face Texas Southern Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. (CT). Great West Conference action will begin Saturday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. (CT) versus Houston Baptist.
The Broncs will be back at home Monday, Sept. 20 when they play host to the Prairie View A&M Panthers at 7 p.m. (CT) at the UTPA Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex.
