HOUSTON - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs Volleyball team swept the Texas Southern Tigers 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-17) Friday, Sept. 17 at the H&PE Arena in Houston.
The Broncs took control of the match from the beginning of the first game grabbing the early lead following a series of Tiger errors. Texas Southern fought their way within one 13-12, but kills from Jimena Gandara and Ijanae Holman sent UTPA on a 7-0 run. Three service aces from senior Ariana Bermea also helped the Broncs secure the game one 25-16 win.
Texas Southern traded the lead with the Broncs at the start of game two, but a kill by Rita Gonzalez put the Broncs on top 10-9. A series of errors plagued the Tigers throughout the remainder of the set as the Broncs rapidly built their lead and claimed game two 25-11.
Marci Logan notched the first point of game three for UTPA, and as the Tigers fought back, the Broncs answered. Logan, along with Holman, Kaitlin Vasquez and Meghan Fichtel all contributed to put the Broncs seven ahead of Texas Southern 14-7. The Tigers came back within two of the Broncs 16-14, but a kill from Gandara gave the Broncs the momentum they needed to secure the match 25-17.
Logan led the Broncs tonight with 10 kills, followed by Fichtel who tallied 8 kills. Gonzalez notched 15 assists, while Charity Cucancic contributed 12. Bermea led UTPA with 5 service aces
Tomorrow, the Broncs will open Great West Conference play at 2 p.m. (CT) at Houston Baptist.
