Broncs drop GWC opener to HBU

HOUSTON - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs Volleyball team fell 0-3 (25-23, 26-24, 25-21) to the Houston Baptist University (HBU) Huskies Saturday, Sept. 18 at Sharp Gym on the HBU campus. Today's match marked the first Great West Conference match of the season for both teams.

UTPA started the first game with the lead until the Huskies moved ahead 10-9. The teams tied four times before a pair of HBU errors allowed the Broncs to take the 16-14 lead. More Husky errors and two kills from Meghan Fichtel put UTPA on top by four 20-16. Two more points notched by Fichtel and Rita Gonzalez kept the Broncs up 23-19, but HBU came back on a 6-0 run that secured game one 25-23.

Senior Marci Logan started game two with a kill for the Broncs, meanwhile HBU tallied their first three points of the set on a Broncs service error and two of their own service aces from Isis Gardner for the Husky 3-1 advantage. The teams tied five times before HBU pulled away with the lead. UTPA stayed close, never trailing by more than three until a kill from Ijanae Holman and HBU attack errors helped the Broncs move ahead 18-17. Points contributed by Fichtel, Logan and Gonzalez put UTPA on top 24-21, but the Huskies were able to stop the Broncs and won the game following a 5-0 run 26-24.

Once again, Logan notched the first point in game three, but a Broncs error and kills from Huskies Heather Leaverton and Jolie Graf helped HBU grab the lead 4-2. The Broncs stayed close throughout the set, never trailing by more than four. Holman brought the Broncs within two 23-21, but kills from HBU's Victoria Weatherly and Leaverton secured the match point 25-21.

Logan led the Broncs this afternoon with 12 kills, 12 digs. Fichtel also tallied 12 kills for the match, while Holman recorded 10 kills. Gonzalez lead in assists with 35.

The Broncs will be back in action Monday, Sept. 20 when they host the Panthers of Prairie View A&M University at 7 p.m. at the UTPA Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex.
