EDINBURG, Texas - Senior Marci Logan led the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs Volleyball team with 17 kills to sweep the Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) Panthers 3-0 (25-16, 28-26, 25-18) Monday, Sept. 20 at the UTPA Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex.
Logan scored the first kill of game one that sent the Broncs on a 5-0 run before the Panthers' Sharonda Marshall stepped up to put PVAMU on the board 5-1. However, UTPA remained in control throughout the first set, gaining an 11 point lead 19-8. Panther Erin Fondel notched a kill to help the Panthers come back, but the Broncs were able to go on another 5-0 run to secure game one 25-16.
The Panthers came back fighting in game two, stealing the 2-1 lead and remained on top throughout most of the set. Slowly, the Broncs came back and tied the game 24-24 on a PVAMU error. Meghan Fichtel recorded a kill that gave the Broncs a 25-24 advantage, but Marshall answered with a kill 25-25. Once again, Fichtel stepped up with a kill, but Marshall responded 26-26. Another PVAMU error and a kill from Ijanae Holman gave the Broncs the 28-26 game two win.
The Broncs claimed the early lead in game three, but the Panthers remained close behind. UTPA was able to gain a five-point advantage 14-9, but kills from PVAMU's Cheri Lindsey helped the Panthers get within one 16-15. Kills from Logan and a service ace by Cassandra Trevino helped the Broncs regain their advantage. The Broncs won the match point 25-18.
In addition to 17 kills, Logan recorded 5 digs. Fichtel tallied 12 kills, while Rita Gonzalez posted 35 assists.
Later this week, the Broncs will hit the road for two GWC match-ups. They will face the NJIT Highlanders Thursday, Sept 23 at 7 p.m. and Chicago State Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.
