CHICAGO - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs Volleyball team topped the Chicago State University (CSU) Cougars 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-21) Saturday afternoon. Today's match was the third straight 3-0 win for the Broncs. Earlier in the week, UTPA swept Prairie View A&M University and New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Chicago State (0-17, 0-3 GWC) took the early lead in game one, but the Broncs (5-12, 1-2 GWC) went on a 7-0 run that included a kill from Ijanae Holman that tied the set 5-5. As the Broncs lead built, the Cougars continued to fight back getting within four points 16-12. Several CSU errors and kills from Holman, Marci Logan and Sarah Davis kept UTPA on top to clinch game one 25-18.
Logan helped the Broncs take control of game two with three early kills. Valeria Desiderio tired to bring CSU back into the game, but the Cougars could not defend against the Broncs. UTPA claimed game two 25-12.
The Cougars came back fighting in game three and took the early lead. Davis and Rita Gonzalez helped UTPA stay close to CSU, but the Broncs did not catch up until a Cougar error tied the game at 11. Shandella Darring put the Cougars back on top 12-11. Meghan Fichtel and Logan notched kills to help UTPA tie at 18 and a kill from Jimena Gandara gave the Broncs the 19-18 lead. UTPA won the match point 25-21.
Davis, Homan and Logan each tallied 10 kills for the Broncs this afternoon. Kaitlin Vasquez led defensively with 17 digs, followed by Logan with 13.
Next week, the Broncs will hit the road for a two-game Great West Conference road trip against North Dakota and South Dakota.
