ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-13) to the UT-Arlington (UTA) Mavericks this afternoon. Today marks the second and final day of the UT-Arlington Maverick Classic at Texas Hall in Arlington, Texas.
A pair of Maverick errors helped the Broncs earn a 2-0 lead in the, but a 5-0 UTA run, helped the Mavs steal a 5-2 lead. Plagued by errors, UTPA could not regain their lead. Another 4-0 run followed by a 5-0 run secured the 25-11 win for UTA.
UTA started the second set with a 4-0 lead on the Broncs. Ijanae Holman brought UTPA back into the game 4-1 with a kill, assisted by Rita Gonzalez. Later, a service ace by Holman once again brought the Broncs within 3 points 8-5, but UTA broke away on a 3-0 run. Jimena Gandara, Meghan Fichtel and Marci Logan each tallied kills for a 3-0 run that brought UTPA within 5 points 21-16, but the Mavs remained in control and claimed the set 25-18.
The Broncs got the third set off to a strong start, keeping the score close with UTA, but a 6-0 Maverick gave UTA control 9-4. A kill by Gandara halted the Mavericks, but it did not last long. UTA remained on top and won the match 25-13.
Holiman lead the Broncs with 7 kills and a pair of service aces, followed by Logan with 7 kills. Gonzalez tallied 20 assists and Ariana Bermea chipped in 15 digs.
UTPA will be back in action at 5 p.m. (CT) against Arkansas-Little Rock.
