Broncs blanked by Islanders

EDINBURG, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Broncs volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-18) to the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) Islanders Tuesday, Sept. 7.

The Broncs started the first set of the match point-for-point, but a kill by TAMUCC's Shannon Hullum sent the Islanders on a 4-0 run 7-3. The Broncs were able to get within 3 points of the Islanders 13-10, but TAMUCC broke away to claim set one 25-14.

The Islanders came out in full force for set two, quickly breaking away from UTPA on a 4-0 run followed by a 5-0 run to take the 10-2 lead. A pair of TAMUCC errors followed by kills from Ijanae Holman and Kaitlin Vasquez gave the Broncs a boost to bring the score to 13-6, but UTPA could not make the comeback. The Islanders won set two 25-10.

TAMUCC started the third set strong once again, and took an early 7-2 lead on the Broncs. Three kills by senior Marci Logan helped UTPA get within 4 points of the Islanders 22-18, but the TAMUCC won the match point 25-18 following two kills by Emma Ridley and one by Jordan Flemmer.

Logan led the Broncs with8 kills, followed by Rita Gonzalez with 15 assists. Ariana Bermea also tallied 12 digs.

Today's contest was the first of two meetings between UTPA and TAMUCC this season. The teams will square off next Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. (CT) in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Next up for the Broncs is the UTSA Classic featuring UTPA, UTSA, Davidson and UTEP Sept. 10-11. UTPA will be back in action at home Monday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. when the Broncs host Texas State at the UTPA Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex.
