EDINBURG, Texas – The UTPA women's basketball team travels to Newark, N.J. for an 4 p.m. (CT) match-up with the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders Wednesday, Jan. 12. Wednesday's contest marks the start of Great West Conference (GWC) play for both teams.
UTPA (8-10) enter Wednesday's game following an 84-70 loss to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders Jan. 5. During the contest, the Broncs saw four players score double-digits. Ce'Monay Newell led the squad with 16 points, followed by Bianca Torre with 15 points. Adanna Opara chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds, while Erin Lewis tallied 11 points and 9 assists.
Torre leads the Broncs this season with 17.9 points per game, followed by Newell with 16.3 points per game. Opara is posting 7.8 points per game and leads the team in rebounds with 6.8 per game.
Last time out, NJIT (3-10) fell 76-54 to Harvard in Cambridge, Mass. Jan. 9. Three days earlier, the Highlanders escaped Brown with a 63-61 win in Providence, RI.
Jessica Gerald leads the Highlanders with 13.7 points per game, and Melanie Griffin is averaging 11.5 points per game.
Last season, the Broncs topped the Highlanders 62-54 on their home court, but fell on the road 70-66.
