CHICAGO, Illinois- The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team fell behind early and never lead as Broncs dropped their fifth straight game 86-61 to the Cougars of Chicago State Saturday afternoon. This is the second straight Great West Conference loss for the UTPA women.
The Broncs (8-12, 0-2 GWC) fell behind early in the first half as the Cougars took immediate control. Biance Torre made an effort to keep it close by hitting a three with 14:53 remaining in the period pulling the Broncs to within 15-10. The Cougars responded with a 6-1 run to take a 21-11 lead with 12:22 remaining in the half after Tressa Beckel's lay-up.
The Cougars later took a 13 point lead at 32-19 after Caila Desroches hit a pair of free throws with 7:52 to play until the intermission. The Broncs then began a furious rally. Bianca Torre capped off a 13-0 UTPA run with a pair of threes as the Broncs tied the game at 32 with 4:36 remaining in the half. The comeback feel short as CSU responded with a 12-1 run to close out the first period with a 44-33 lead.
The second half was more of the same from the Cougars. The Broncs would shoot just 37% from the field in the second half and were outscored 42-28 en route to the loss. Texas-Pan American was never closer than nine points for the entire second half.
Torre led all UTPA scorers with 17 points. Ce'Monay Newell added 14 points and four rebounds. Donna Jackson added 12 points and a team high eight rebounds. Erin Lewis dished out nine assists.
Courtney Waldon was spectacular for CSU scoring a game high 31 points and hauling in 10 rebounds in the win. Waldon played all 40 minutes on Saturday. Beckel chipped in with 21 points and 12 rebounds while Elana Wroten, Janay Dockery and and Jazzmyn Harvey each added eight points apiece. Natlie Marlowe added a game-high 11 assists.
The Broncs continue their season long road trip on Saturday when they take on Houston Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15 PM.
