BOX SCORE

HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team used a second half 17-3 run to take control of the game late as the Broncs ended a five game losing skid in a 76-61 win over Houston Baptist Saturday night at Sharp Gymnasium. Saturday was the first Great West Conference victory of the season for Texas-Pan American.

The Broncs (9-12, 1-2 GWC) had trouble finding their shot in the early moments of the game as they made just four of their first 12 field goal attempts. HBU (2-16, 0-3 GWC) was looking for their first victory since December 11th when they beat San Houston State.

After trailing for a majority of the early moments on Saturday, UTPA re-claimed the lead at 14-13 with 9:03 to play in the first half on a Adanna Opara lay-up. The lead did not last long as the Huskies scored lay-ups on back-to-back possessions and tallied a three-point play by Destini Taxada to lead at 18-16. UTPA then grabbed a 21-20 lead on a Donna Jackson three-point play with 7:11 remaining in the half.

HBU began to assert themselves with a 7-0 run, capped off by a Texada three-point play, and led 27-21 with 5:37 remaining in the half. UTPA responded with a 10-0 run, ended by a Maria Ben-Erlingdottir two-for-two trip to the foul line, which gave the Broncs a 31-27 lead with a 1:27 to play until the intermission. The lead was brief as the Huskies scored the next six points and led 33-31 at halftime.

The first half saw the Broncs and Huskies traded the led nine times with four ties. The Broncs shot 37% in the first 20 minutes, while the Huskies shot 44%.

In the second half, the pendulum continued to swing as the two schools traded the lead on three more occasions. With 10:01 to play, Brittany Barton nailed a three-point to tie the game for the 10th time in the game at 46 apiece. The Broncs offense, which had been cold for a majority of the game began to heat up.

UTPA responded with the 17-3 run over the next 5:18 of the half, capped off by a pair of Erin Lewis drives to the basket, and took a 63-49 lead with 4:43 remaining in the contest. The Broncs outscored HBU in the second half 45-48 en-route to the 15 point victory.

Donna Jackson scored a career-high 18 points and added 10 boards for her first career double-double to lead the way for the Broncs. Re-Shawndra Jackson added a double-double of her own with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Bianca Torre scored in double figures for the fourth straight game with 13 points, adding five assists. Erin Lewis scored seven with a game high six assists. The Broncs out-rebounded the Huskies 47-38.

Texada kept the Huskies in it throughout with her strong play as she netted 10 of her 13 shots scoring 22 points and bringing down a game-high 14 boards. Tia Jackson added 13 for HBU as the only other double-digit Husky scorer. Megan Green scored eight with a team-high four assists. HBU shot just 32% in the second half on 10-31 shooting.

The Broncs continue their season long eight game road trip next Thursday when they face the Fighting Sioux of the University of North Dakota. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
