EDINBURG, Texas- The University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team will take a break from Great West Conference play as they play a non-conference match up against the Texas Southern Tigers Tuesday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
The Broncs are on a three-match losing streak and are coming off of a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-15) loss against North Dakota this past Saturday afternoon. UTPA played well in the opening set as they fought back to tie the set at 24 but UND picked up the final two points to take the set. The Broncs started the second and third sets by taking the early lead but the Fighting Sioux managed to take the final two sets as well.
Krysta Freitas paced the Broncs with six kills and seven digs.
Michelle McNamee chipped in a team-high seven kills. Defensively,
Juri Franzen had 11 digs and
Shauna Miller had 14 assists for the UTPA.
UTPA enters play against the Tigers 5-17 on the season and are led by
Ijanae Holman who averages 2.38 kills per set.
Juri Franzen paces the defense with 3.92 digs per set and she also has a team high 19 service aces.
Shauna Miller helps set the offense with 7.07 assists per set.
The Tigers are 1-17 on the season and are also 0-5 on the road. Texas Southern is coming off of a 3-0 (25-19, 252-18, 25-22) loss to Mississippi Valley State on Oct.7
th. Mona Reed leads the Tigers with 2.77 kills per set while Sara Whooten averages 4.44 assists per set. Defensively, Prudence Anusim records 2.16 digs per game while Reed adds 1.77 digs per game.
The Broncs lead the all-time series 34-10 with the last win was a 3-0 victory coming last season on Sept. 17.
