BRONCS SNAP SKID WITH SWEEP OF TEXAS SOUTHERN

EDINBURG, Texas-The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team snapped their three-match losing streak after a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-11) victory over the Texas Southern Tigers Tuesday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse. 
 
The Broncs (6-17, 1-4 GWC) fell behind early in the first set after a kill by Britaniey Moore gave Texas Southern the 2-0 lead.  A block by Diara Reynolds then tied things at two.  The Broncs pushed their lead to 8-5 after a service error on the Tigers.  UTPA grabbed their biggest lead of the set at 20-15 after Michelle McNamee and Sara Davis teamed up on a block but Texas Southern to get the score to 23-22.  A ball handling error by the Tigers gave the Broncs the first set 25-23.
 
In the second set, UTPA jumped out to the 2-0 lead after a kill by Reynolds but the Tigers (1-18) with three straight points to take the lead.  The Broncs answered with a 6-1 run giving them the lead once again at 8-4.  Texas Southern managed to tie things at eight before the Broncs regained the lead with kill by Reynolds.  The Tigers would tie the set four more times before the Broncs went on a 9-1 run to close out the second set with a 25-17 victory.
 
UTPA jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the final set and then were able to run away with the lead.  They pushed their lead to 13-5 after a kill by Davis and then went on an 8-3 run that was capped by a Krissy Perez service ace that made it 21-8.  Krysta Freitas had five kills in the third set with the fifth kill giving the Broncs the 25-11 third set victory and the match.
 
Maria Kliefoth and Krysta Freitas led the way for the Broncs with 10 kills each while Michelle McNamee and Diara Reynolds each added seven respectively.  Defensively, Juri Franzen paced the Broncs with 18 digs and McNamee chipped in 11 digs of her own.  Macey Singleton had a game-high 21 assists.
 
For the Tigers, Moore had six kills and five digs.  Prudence Anusim paced their defense with nine digs and Sarah Wooten added 14 assists.
 
The Broncs return to action on Saturday Oct. 22nd as they play host to Huston-Tilloston at 2:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse for another non-conference match.
