OREM, Utah- The University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team suffered its third straight loss after a 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-19) setback against the Utah Valley Wolverines at the UVU Activity Center Saturday afternoon.
The Broncs (7-20, 1-6 GWC) fell behind 5-1 in the first set after service ace by UVU's McKenna Tait. UTPA then answered back and tied things at five on an attack error by Jaicee Kuresa. UVU then went on a 10-2 run to grab the 15-7 lead forcing the Broncs to call a timeout. After a kill by
Ashten Landry that made it 18-8, both teams went back-and-forth but UVU eventually took the first set 25-13.
Krysta Freitas got the Broncs on the board in the second set with a kill but the Wolverines quickly grabbed the lead. A service ace by
Juri Franzen got the Broncs within one at 7-6 but UVU then went on an 8-0 run that extended their lead 15-6. Another kill by Freitas got the Broncs within seven before the Wolverines finished off the set with a 25-12 victory.
In the third set, both teams found themselves tied at 10 before
Michelle McNamee gave the Broncs the lead with a kill. A rally by the Wolverines gave them the 16-13 lead after a kill by Brooklyn Campbell. A kill by
Sarah Davis made it 17-14 in favor of UVU. A 6-2 run by the Wolverines then pushed their lead to 23-16. Sarah Clement got the final point of the match on a kill giving UVU the 25-19 third set victory.
Diara Reynolds and
Krysta Freitas led the way for the Broncs as they each posted six kills each while Freitas added four digs.
Shauna Miller paced the offense with 18 assists.
Juri Franzen recorded six digs and
Macey Singleton added five.
For Utah Valley, Sarah Clement and Jaicee Kuresa notched eight kills each. Brooklyn Campbell recorded 32 kills in the match while McKenna Tait had six digs defensively.
The Broncs return to action and return home on November 3 as NJIT comes to the UTPA Fieldhouse for a conference matchup which is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
