BRONCS END ROAD SWING TODAY AGAINST TEXAS RIVAL PRAIRIE VIEW A&M

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American volleyball program will try to win its fifth match of the season when they play Prairie View A&M today at 6:30 p.m at the William Nicks Building on the PVAMU campus.

The Broncs (4-14, 1-1) are coming off a 3-0 Great West Conference loss against New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday. The loss ended UTPA's three match win streak over Morgan State, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon and Chicago State.

UTPA's loss against NJIT was a close one, as the teams tied the score at several points of the match and traded the lead eight times. However, the Broncs weren't able to pull through at crucial times, which caused them to fall short in all three sets and end the match 25-19, 25-23, 25-19.

Ijanae Holman continues as the leading attacker for the Broncs; the junior posted 11 kills and eight digs Saturday. Krysta Freitas chipped in with 10 kills and six digs. On the defense line, Juri Franzen led the Broncs in digs with 13. In addition, Shauna Miller helped with 26 assists against NJIT.

Holman also stands on top of the season statistics in kills with an average of 2.46 per set. Franzen leads the team with 3.98 digs per set, while Miller averages 7.48 assists per set so far this season.

Prairie View (3-10) goes into today's match in a three-game winning streak. The Panthers, however, did not have a good first half of the season as they lost their first 10 matches before beating Grambling State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern.

The leading players for Prairie View are Christine Ruckman, who averages 2.22 kills per game, and Maria Moulez with 6.40 assists per set. Shanice Faison and Breanna McNeil are the leaders in digs with averages of 2.65 and 1.73 respectively.

After facing Prairie View this afternoon, the Broncs will resume GWC play when they host Houston Baptist Saturday at 2 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
