BRONCS START HOME STAND WITH LOSS TO HBU

EDINBURG, Texas- The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team dropped their first game of their six-game home stand as they fell 0-3 (18-25, 15-25, 21-25) at the hands of the Houston Baptist Huskies Saturday afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse. 
 
The Broncs grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first set after an ace by Maria Kliefoth.  HBU then went on a 6-0 run after being tied at five to grab the 11-5 lead, which the Huskies would never give back.  Jolie Graf picked up the kill for the final point of the set giving Houston Baptist the 25-18 victory.
 
In the second set, UTPA took the early 3-1 lead after Diara Reynolds and Sara Davis teamed up on a block.  The Broncs hung in there against the Huskies, as there were five ties in the second set.  HBU closed out the second set on another 6-0 run giving them the 25-15 victory.
 
The third set was a back and forth contest with eight ties and four lead changes.  Tied at 13, the Broncs went on an 8-4 run for the 21-17 lead but HBU then answered with an 8-0 run to close out the set. UTPA dropped the final set 21-25 and the match 0-3.
 
Krysta Freitas led the Broncs with a team-high nine kills while Ijanae Holman added eight kills of her own.  Juri Franzen led the way defensively with 13 digs.   Shauna Miller had a team-high 15 assist. 
 
Jolie Graf who had nine kills led the way for the Huskies.  Courtney Whittleman had a team-high 19 digs while Jasmine Casey and Heather Leaverton added 13 digs apiece. 
 
The Broncs return to action October 13th as they play host to Great West Conference rival Utah Valley University with a game time set for 7:00 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
