EDINBURG, Texas - The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team prepares to face Texas State on Friday at 12 p.m. for its second home game at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs will notch a 2-0 home record (2-1 overall) if they defeat the Bobcats this Friday. The last time the two squads played each other was last year. The Broncs took the win 83-75 on the fourth win for UTPA in the 32 meetings the teams have had.
Monday, the Broncs opened their home schedule with a win over Paul Quinn College. UTPA jumped to an 8-0 lead before Chanequea Hills, who led all scorers that night with 21 points and seven rebounds, made six straight points. The Broncs, however, were able to regain control and maintained a constant lead throughout both periods to wrap up the game with a 72-43 score.
LaQuita Garner led UTPA scorers that night with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists,
Donna Jackson notched 11 points and five rebounds, while
Bianca Torre chipped in with 11 points, six assists and six steals.
Garner is the leading scorer for the Broncs so far this season; she averages 14 points and four rebounds followed by Jackson and Torre who have eight and seven points per game, respectively.
Texas State (2-0) comes from a 63-50 win over Concordia Monday night at Strahan Coliseum. Bobcats Diamond Ford and Ashley Ezeh were the leading scorers for the Bobcats with 19 points each.
The Bobcats have allowed only 78 points in their first two games, and Ford has averaged 23.5 points per game and made .654 shots from the field. Ezeh has made 15 points per game for a 54.5 percent from the field.
After taking on Texas State, the Broncs travel to El Paso to face UTEP Nov. 22 before heading to Houston for the Houston Classic Nov. 25 and 26.
Friday's game is also part of UTPA's AVID Day, when the Broncs will welcome 1,800 middle and high school students to campus. The day's activities include presentations encouraging education, information on the higher educational opportunities provided by UTPA, and the chance for the students to meet with UTPA Student Government Association senators, Bronc student-athletes, and other representatives from student organizations at UTPA. Following the morning seminars and lunch, the students will attend the women's basketball game between UTPA and Texas State.
Over 4,800 schools nationally, from 48 states, participate in AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. Locally, 78 schools in the RIo Grande Valley are involved in the AVID program, and 23 of those schools will be attending AVID Day at UTPA.
