HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the McNeese State Cowgirls, 67-46, in game one of the Houston Classic on Friday at Hofheinz Pavilion on the campus of the University of Houston.
The Broncs (1-4) were within 12-11 with 10:50 remaining in the first half after
Bianca Torre hit a three-pointer on a dish from
Erin Lewis, but
Ashlyn Baggett started and ended a 10-0 run with a jumper and a three-pointer respectively to make it 22-11 Cowgirls (4-1).
Jasmine Gordon responded with a three-pointer of her own and
Johnondra Patterson hit a lay-up to bring the Broncs within 22-16, but the Cowgirls closed the half on a 7-0 run over the final 6:29 to go up 29-16.
The Cowgirls opened the second half on a 13-4 run, thanks in-part to a pair of three-pointers by
LaCombe Candace to go up 42-20 with 16:55 remaining. The Cowgirls hit 10-of-22 shots from behind the arc (45.5%), including a 4-for-4 performance by
Caitlyn Baggett, who finished with a game-high 16 points. The Broncs were 3-for-6 (50%) from behind the arc.
Donna Jackson led the Broncs with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Martika Hull recorded a double-double for the Cowgirls with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
The Broncs close the Houston Classic on Saturday when they face Yale University at 1:00 p.m.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
