BRONCS FALL TO COUGARS IN HOME FINALE

EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team dropped their final home game of the 2011 season to the Chicago State Cougars 3-2 (25-27, 25-16, 22-25, 26-24, 12-15) Saturday afternoon at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The loss extends the Broncs matching losing streak to five games. 
 
The Broncs grabbed the early 3-0 lead after a kill by Sarah Davis.  UTPA extended their lead to 5-2 on another kill by Davis but the Cougars climbed back into and tied things at 11 after a UTPA error.  The Broncs then regained the lead on yet another kill from Davis.  After tying the game at 22, the Cougars then got their first lead on a kill by Alexandra Mason.  Chicago State then went on a 4-2 run to close out the set with a 27-25 win.
 
In the second set, the Broncs fell behind early 5-0 before Diara Reynolds got them on the board with a kill.  After an 8-3 run tied the game at eight, Michelle McNamee gave them the lead with a kill.  The Cougars tied the set at 11 on a kill by Mazvita Maziveyi but the Broncs quickly regained the lead with a kill by Maria Kliefoth.  An attack error by Chicago State then pushed the Broncs lead 20-14.  McNamee then closed out the set with a kill giving the Broncs the 25-16 second set win.
 
After UTPA grabbed the 2-0 lead, Chicago State went on a 5-0 run to grab the lead at 5-2.  Sydney Van Munster then pushed the lead for the Cougars to 8-4 with a kill.  Juri Franzen notched a service ace to cut the Cougar's lead 12-8.  Chicago State then went on a 9-3 run to give them the biggest lead of the set at 22-11.  The Broncs responded with an 11-4 run but the rally fell short as they dropped the third set 25-22.
 
The Broncs quickly fell behind 7-2 in the fourth set after a couple of errors.  Maria Kliefoth cut the Cougars lead in half with a kill and made it 8-4.  The Broncs then cut more into the lead with a kill by Macey Singleton before tying the game at 13 with a kill by McNamee.  UTPA grabbed the lead in the fourth set on an attack error by the Cougars and never gave it back taking the fourth set 26-24.
 
Texas Pan-American jumped out to the 2-0 lead in the fifth set but the Cougars went on a 6-2 run to grab the lead.  The Broncs tied the set at eight on a block by McNamee, Singleton and Kliefoth and then grabbed the 11-10 lead on an attack error by Chicago State.  The Cougars then finished the set and the match on a 5-1 run and a kill by Rachel Levitt closed out the set 15-12.
 
Michelle McNamee led the way for the Broncs with 12 kills and four digs.  Sarah Davis and Diara Reynolds each added 11 kills.  Juri Franzen paced the defense with 35 digs with another service ace.  Shauna Miller added 44 assists for the offense. 
 
For the Cougars, Alexandra Mason and Mazvita Maziveyi each recorded 17 kills while Rachel Levitt added 13 kills.  Mysta Townsell led the way for the defense with 31 digs.
 
The Broncs will return to action on November 11 when they travel to Houston, Texas to face off against Texas Southern and then face Houston Baptist on the 12th.
