SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball had three players reach double-figures scoring in a 68-54 loss to the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners on Wednesday at the Convocation Center in the final game of the UTSA Holiday Classic.
Making the second start of her career,
Keandra Goodson recorded her first-career double-double, with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
LaQuita Garner scored a team-high 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including three three-pointers and Harlingen-native
Bianca Torre scored 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting.
The Roadrunners (4-7) jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the opening two minutes, but Torre hit a jumper and
Donna Jackson hit a pair of free throws to tie the game.
Simone Young and
Ashley Gardner made baskets to put the Roadrunners up 12-8, but
Donna Jackson and
Cassandra Moody hit lay-ups for the Broncs (4-11) to tie the game. The Roadrunners again went up by four, but the Broncs tied the game at 16-16, this time on four free throws by Jackson, who finished with nine points.
The Broncs took their only lead of the game with 9:15 remaining in the first half on a Goodson lay-up that made it 18-16. The Roadrunners scored the next eight points to go up 24-18 on a Young lay-up less than three minutes later.
The Broncs were within 33-29 at halftime, but the Roadrunners opened the second half on a 16-6 run to put the game out of reach.
The Roadrunners were led by Gardner, who scored a game-high 18 points with six rebounds, two assists, one steal and three blocks. Young scored 11 points with five rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks while
Whitney Wright scored 10 points with eight rebounds and six blocks.
The Broncs return home on Wednesday, December 28 at 7:00 p.m. when they host the University of Texas at Arlington at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I classification. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports; men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. In 1963, then known as Pan American College, the Broncs men's basketball program won the NAIA National Championship with a 73-62 victory over Western Carolina. In 2008 UTPA joined the new all-sports division of the Great West Conference.
