EDINBURG, Texas- The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team continues their Great West Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon as they host the New Jersey Institute of Technology at 5:30 PM at the UTPA Fieldhouse. It is the first of three straight home games to end the 2010-11 regular season for UTPA.
The Broncs (10-17, 2-7 GWC) are coming off an 82-70 road loss to Utah Valley University last Saturday in Orem. The Broncs led the Wolverines at halftime 45-41 after shooting 49% from the field, and they hit five of their six three-point attempts in the first twenty minutes of the game. Torre scored 17 points to lead the Broncs at intermission.
UTPA made only eight of 32 field goal attempts (25%) and hit just two of 11 three-point attempts (18.2%) in the second half. The Wolverines got a 15 point second half performance from Abbie Beutler to assist with the UVU rally. The Wolverines outscored UTPA 41-25 in the second half to earn the 12 point victory.
NJIT (7-15, 3-4 GWC) is coming off a surprising 71-66 road defeat at Houston Baptist on Thursday night. It was the first conference win of the season for HBU. NJIT, pounded HBU, 82-55, on January 15 in Newark, but could not find an answer for the Huskies in the rematch. Rayven Johnson led the Highlander effort with 14 points, while freshman Uju Nwankwo had her first career double-double, with 12 points and 10 boards. The loss was NJIT's third in a row.
Jessica Gerald leads the Highlanders in scoring at 16.1 per contest but has not played in the last three games for NJIT due to injury.
Bianca Torre is the leading scorer for UTPA and the second leading scorer in the GWC at 17.1 points per contest.
The Broncs lost their match-up earlier this season with NJIT 68-60 in Newark on Janaury 12th. It was the Great West Conference opener for both schools.
Ce'Monay Newell led the Broncs in scoring with 16 points.
