EDINBURG, Texas- The University of Texas Pan American women's basketball team snapped their four-game losing streak with an 80-67 victory over Houston Baptist University Wednesday night at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs (10-16, 2-6 GWC) grabbed the first lead of the game with a layup from Donna Jackson, who scored six of the first 12 points for UTPA. Bianca Torre converted two free throws to cap a 13-5 run that helped the Broncs extend their lead to 23-16. Houston Baptist (2-21, 0-8 GWC) capped a 10-2 run, which gave them their first lead of the game at 32-30, with a three-pointer from Megan Green with 2:00 left in the half.
The Broncs scored 15 points off of 11 first half Houston Baptist turnovers. UTPA shot 36% from the field in the first half and made 7-10 free throws. The Broncs and Huskies went into the locker-room at halftime tied at 34-34.
Ce'Monay Newell started the second half with a three-pointer, which gave the Broncs control for the rest of the game. Torre made a jumper with 10:27 left in the game that capped an 11-4 run that gave the Broncs the 57-44 lead. Houston Baptist got as close as eight points after a Mele Leasau layup with 3:54 left in the game which made it 68-60.
The Broncs grabbed their biggest lead of the night after Erin Lewis made a layup to make it 74-60 with 1:37 left to play. UTPA shot 64% in the second half that helped them outscore HBU 46-33. The Broncs took advantage of 11 HBU turnovers and converted them into 11 points.
Donna Jackson had her second double-double of the season after scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Lewis also had a double-double, her first of the season, with 12 points and 10 assists. Torre finished the night with 18 points and Newell chipped in 15 points and five rebounds.
Destini Texada and Tia Jackson were the only players in double figures for the Huskies. Texada scored 22 and Jackson had 21.
The Broncs continue their GWC schedule on Saturday when they travel to Utah Valley. The Broncs fell to the Wolverines last Thursday 71-62 at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Tip-off for their re-match with UVU is set for a 5:30 tip-off.
