GAME NOTES
COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team will look stay unbeaten on the 2011 season as they travel to face the ninth-ranked Aggies of Texas A&M University for a two game series beginning tonight at Olsen Field. First pitch for Tuesday's game will be 6:35 PM and Wednesday's first pitch is scheduled for 3:05 PM
The Broncs (5-0) are off to their best start since the 1988 season after winning two games each against Saint Louis and Illinois Chicago in the Al Ogletree Classic and a win last week against UT-system rival UTB/TSC. A win on Tuesday would give the Broncs their first 6-0 start since the 1979 season.
Staff ace
Jonathan Delgado (Jr.,1-0, 1.50 ERA) will take the ball for UTPA in the first game of the series.
Cody Plunk (Sr., RHP, 1-0, 2.25) is scheduled to take the mound on Wednesday. The Broncs pitching has been superb to start the season with a staff ERA of 1.47 and a SO/BB ratio of 36/19. No Bronc starter has allowed more than a single earned run over the first five games.
Delgado, started the first game of the season for UTPA, pitching six innings and stirking out six to earn the W in a 5-4 win over Illinois-Chicago.
On the offensive side of the ball the Broncs are led by senior outfielder
Stuart MacInnes who is second on the team in hitting with a .444 average, with three doubles, one homer and three RBI. MacInnes is the reigning player of the week in the Great West Conference. Freshman
Colton Van Komen has been superb in a reserve role. Van Komen has two hits in four at-bats, a triple and a homer with three RBI. The Broncs average 5.6 runs per contest this season.
The Aggies (6-1) are off to a great 2011 start as well. TAMU is ranked ninth in the USA Today/Coaches poll but are ranked as high as #8 in other college baseball polls. The Aggies won their first six games, all at Olsen Field before dropping the final game of a three-game set to Gonzaga 6-3 on Sunday. The series against UTPA is the final series of a nine game homestand for the Aggies before they compete in the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
Junior southpaw Estevan Uriegas (Jr. 0-0, 9.00 ERA), is making his first start of the season on Tuesday after making three relief appearances earlier this season. In Wednesday's game Dylan Mendoza (So., LHP, 1-0, 1.29) will take the hill for TAMU.
The Aggies and Broncs have met 71 times before this 2011 series. The Aggies have a 54-17 advanatage over UTPA. The last meeting was back in 2007. The Aggies have won the last six in a row in the series.
