CARDINALS SWEEP BRONCS IN WEDNESDAY DOUBLEHEADER

BEAUMONT, Texas- The University of Texas Pan American (UTPA) baseball team scored just a single run over 18 innings of play on Wednesday as the Lamar Cardinals swept the Broncs in a doubleheader by finals of 8-1 and 6-0 at Vincent Beck Stadium. The Broncs (5-6) have now lost six straight after winning the first five games of the season. The Cardinals (14-6) have now won six straight games.

In game one the Broncs took an early one-run lead on a one-out RBI single by Vinny Mejia in the top of the first inning. The hit scored Roger Bernal from second base giving the Broncs the 1-0 lead.

The lead didn't last long as Lamar's Aaron Buchanan drew a one out walk in the bottom of the first and moved into scoring position on a stolen base. Jeff Abt singled in Buchanan on a 1-1 count to tie the game at a run apiece. The Cards took the lead in the bottom of the second as Pablo Salinas scored on a throwing error by Bronc first baseman Angel Ibañez making the score 2-1. Lamar would score a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to cap off their scoring.

Lamar first baseman Wade Mathis went 3-4 with a pair of runs scored while centerfielder Ten Zentik drove in a pair of runs on a 2-4 game one. Mejia had a pair of hits for the Broncs, including his third double of the year, and drove in the only run for UTPA.

Cody Laird (W, 2-0) pitched 3.2 innings of one-hit relief, striking out two Broncs, to earn the victory for Lamar. Cody Plunk (L, 1-2) took the game one defeat for the Broncs allowing four runs, three earned, on four Cardinal hits in his 4.0 innings of work. Plunk walked four and struck out three.

In game two the Broncs did not score and were held to just three hits by Cardinal pitching. The Broncs had just one runner reach third base in game two.

Lamar took the lead in the bottom of the first as Kevin Roebuck, after singling to lead-off the frame, scored on a throwing error by Brandon Roush to make the score 1-0 Lamar. In the fifth, errors would cost the Broncs again. After an Abt walk, Mathis reached on a Roush error. Joey Latulippe drove in Abt with a single to left field to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Jude Vidrine drove in Mathis on a sacrifice fly increasing the Lamar lead to 3-0.

Roebuck (W, 1-1) started and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one two Bronc hits to earn the victory for Lamar. Luis Flores (L, 0-1) took the loss in first start of the season, allowing three runs, two earned, walking five and striking out three in five innings of work.

The Broncs will look to end their skid next weekend as they travel to Louisiana Tech for a three game weekend series beginning on Friday March 25th. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 6:00 PM. The Broncs and Bulldogs will play a doubleheader the following day.
