GAME NOTES
EDINBURG, TEXAS- The University of Texas Pan American baseball team continues Great West Conference play Friday night as they host the New Jersey of Institute of Technology Highlanders for a four-game weekend series at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs (14-10, 4-0) are coming off of a 12-9 victory over the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders where the Broncs smashed out 17 hits. Vincent Mejia led the way for the Broncs going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
UTPA is led offensively by Stuart MacInnes who is second on the team in batting average (.366), tied for third in RBIs (14) and second in doubles (9). The Broncs have five players batting over .300, including MacInnes.
Mike McCarthy and Mejia are atop the RBI leaders with 20 and 18, respectively. Mejia is also fourth in batting average (.353) and leads the team in doubles (11) and walks (17).
The Broncs are 4-1 all-time vs NJIT. They took three-of-four from the Highlanders last season, including a 14-1 victory in the Great West Conference Tournament.
NJIT (6-19, 0-4) is coming off of a 12-6 victory against Iona and looking for their first GWC win. Matt Tomczyk leads the Highlanders in hitting with a .347 batting average. DJ Roche is their top run producer with 21 RBIs and has hit two home runs.
The Broncs look to extend their five-game win streak and remain perfect in conference play Friday night as Michael Zouzalik (3-1, 3.49 ERA) takes the mound in game one with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
