GREELEY, COLORADO- The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Northern Colorado Bears with scores of 5-2 and 5-1 Saturday evening at Jackson field. The Broncs have now dropped six straight.
In game one, the Broncs (16-15, 6-4) got the scoring started in the opening inning.
Adrian De La Rosa led off the inning with a single to right field and then moved to second after
Roger Bernal singled to left.
Angel Ibanez followed with an RBI single through the right side that allowed De La Rosa to score from second.
Vincent Mejia then hit an RBI single to left field that scored Bernal from second giving the Broncs the 2-0 lead.
Northern Colorado (10-26, 6-4) answered back in the bottom of the second inning against
Luis Flores. Jarod Berggren led off the inning with a triple and then came into score on a Casey Coy RBI infield single. Tony Crudo followed with a single to left but a fielding error allowed Coy and Crudo to move up an extra base. Matt Jones then hit a two-run double that allowed Coy and Crudo to score from second and third. One out later, Adam Hilker hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Jones from third giving the Bears the 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears added one more run on an RBI single by Bret Fanning that drove in Jones from second base to make it 5-2.
That would be all the scoring in game one as both pitchers went the distance. Flores (1-3) picked up the loss after allowing five runs, four of which came in the bottom of the second inning, on 10 hits and striking out three. Josh Boyer (1-1) picked up the win after allowing just two runs in the first inning and striking out four.
In game two, both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning. Casey Coy broke the scoreless tie with a leadoff home run. Tony Crudo then followed with a double to center field and then moved to third on a fly ball by Matt Jones. Marcus Venezuela followed with a two-run home run giving the Bears the 3-0 lead.
The Bears (11-26, 7-4) picked up two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly by Jones and an RBI single by Venezuela making it 5-0 Northern Colorado.
The Broncs (16-16, 6-5) got on the score board in the top of the seventh.
Jason Webb hit a two-out triple to right center field and then came into score on
Adrian De La Rosa's RBI single to center which made the score 5-1 Bears.
Brendan Hall pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning for the save giving Northern Colorado the 5-1 victory.
Cody Plunk (1-4) picked up the loss after pitching five and two-third innings and allowing five runs on nine hits. A.J. Franco had a great showing out of the bullpen after pitching two innings and a third of shut out baseball while allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Chris Carlberg (2-2) picked up the victory for the Bears after pitching seven innings and allowing just one run.
The Broncs and the Bears wrap up their four-game series Sunday morning at Jackson Field with the first pitch scheduled for 11:30 a.m. UTPA comes back home on Tuesday April 26th as they host the University of Texas-Brownsville in the Battle of the Orange.
