BRONCS SUFFER SERIES SWEEP IN 14-4 LOSS TO BEARS

GREELEY, COLORADO- The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team suffered their seventh straight defeat on Sunday as they dropped the final game of their four-game Great West Conference series  14-4 in eight innings against the University of Northern Colorado.

The Broncs (16-17, 6-6 GWC) got on the scoreboard first in the top half of the second inning. Iradier Hernandez reached on a two-out single to right field. The next batter up was Brandon Roush who hit a two-one pitch down the right field line for a double, scoring Hernandez to give the Broncs the 1-0 lead.

Northern Colorado (12-26, 8-4 GWC) took their first lead in the third. T.J. Berge drove in a a run from third on an RBI groundout to second base to tie the game at 1-1. Ben Packard was next up and drove in the Bears' second run with a single to left field giving the Bears a 2-1 advantage.

In the fourth, the Broncs tied the game at 2-2 after an RBI single by Hernandez, scoring Angel Ibañez from second.

The tie did not last long, the Bears scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth to take the lead for good. Marcus Valenzuela hit a sacrifice fly to left center to score Casey Coy from third, giving UNC a 3-2 lead. Next batter up was Adam Hilker, his RBI single scored Tony Crudo to put UNC further in front at 4-2.

After the Broncs scored a single run in the fifth, the Bears put on an offensive explosion in the bottom half of the inning. The Bears scored nine runs on eight hits to go in front 13-3. Jarod Berggren hit a three run homer, his fourth of the season, to start the scoring in the nine run inning.

The Bears added a run in the eighth inning to end the game with the 10 run advantage.

Jonathan Delgado (L, 2-3) took the defeat for the Broncs after allowing 10 earned runs in four innings of work, walking three and striking out one. Casey Coy (W, 1-1) pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits to pick up his first victory of the season. Cameron Tallman pitched three innings of relief to pick up the save.

The Broncs return home on Tuesday night when they face off against the University of Texas-Brownsville/Texas Southmost College. It will be the second meeting between the two Valley rivals this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
