HOUSTON, Texas- The University of Texas Pan American baseball team will continue Great West Conference play as they travel to Houston to face the Huskies from Houston Baptist University in a four-game series this weekend at Husky Field.
The Broncs (17-17, 6-6 GWC) are coming off a 10-5 victory over the University of Texas-Brownsville that snapped their seven-game losing streak.
Alex Carnall went 3-for-4 with four RBIs including his first home run of the season.
Mike McCarthy leads the Broncs offense with a .374 batting average and a team leading 31 RBIs and is currently on a four-game hit streak.
Vincent Mejia has also been a factor for the Broncs with a .344 batting average, 24 RBIs, a team leading 23 walks and is third on the team with 42 hits.
As a team, Texas Pan-American is batting .304 on the season which is tops in the GWC. The Broncs also lead the GWC with a 4.85 team ERA.
Luis Flores anchors the UTPA pitching staff with a 3.60 ERA and a 1-3 record on the season. AJ Franco has held down the bullpen with a 2.75 ERA and a 2-0 record.
Houston Baptist (10-29, 8-4 GWC) is coming off a 7-6 loss against UT-Arlington on Tuesday. Sophomore Jake Gonzalez led the way for the Huskies with a triple and three RBIs.
The Huskies are led by Robbie Buller who is batting .255 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs. On the mound, HBU has a 6.18 team ERA and are anchored by Jamie Storey who sports a 5.51 ERA with 33 strike outs.
Game one is Friday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The series continues Saturday with a double-header scheduled to start at noon with the finale scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
