BRONCS LOSING SKID CONTINUES IN LOSS TO LUMBERJACKS

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team rallied from three runs down to tie the game, but ultimately fell to the Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin 6-3 Tuesday afternoon at Jaycees Field. The loss extends UTPA's losing skid to 11 games. Tuesday was the final non-conference game of the season for UTPA.

The Lumberjacks took the lead in the third, scoring three unearned runs off of UTPA reliever Troy Green.

The Broncs rallied to tie the game in the sixth inning, answering back with three runs of their own. Angel Ibañez drove in the first UTPA run when he hit a two-out single to left scoring Jason Webb from second to pull the Broncs within two at 3-1. After a failed pick-off attempt allowed Vinnie Mejia to reach third base, Mike McCarthy singled to center driving in a pair of runs to tie the game at 3-3.

The lead didn't last long as SFA brought the go-ahead run across in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Chris Hernandez advanced into scoring position after reaching on a fielder's choice and a UTPA throwing error. After advancing to third on a wild pitch her scored on the Hunter Dozier sacrifice fly to put the Jacks back in front at 4-3.

The Lumberjacks added a pair of runs in the eighth inning to increase their lead to 6-3.

Austin Casas (L, 1-1) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead unearned run in his one inning of relief. Lumberjack starter Brett Higginbotham (W, 2-0) picked up the victory allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with four punch-outs in six innings of work. Alex Moshier pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season.

The Broncs will continue their season ending nine game road trip with their final Great West Conference series this weekend when they travel to Grand Forks, North Dakota to face the Fighting Sioux of the University of North Dakota for four games. Game one of the series is on Friday with a 3:00 PM scheduled first pitch.
