EDINBURG, TEXAS – The University of Texas Pan American baseball team dropped the double-header to the Utah Valley University Wolverines with scores 9-6 and 6-5 Saturday afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Game one saw the Broncs (19-21, 8-10) grab the early lead in the bottom of the first against Zane Gray (2-1).
Adrian De La Rosa got things started with a one-out single and then moved to second after a single by
Mike McCarthy. After a walk to
Vincent Mejia that loaded the bases,
Stuart MacInnes hit an RBI infield single that allowed De La Rosa to score giving UTPA the 1-0 lead.
Utah Valley (21-20, 13-1) answered back with a big inning in the top of the second. RBI singles by Kai Hatch and Billy Burgess along with a couple of errors by the Broncs defense helped the Wolverines score five runs on four hits and took the 5-1 advantage.
Mike McCarthy reached on a walk in the bottom of the third and then moved to third on singles by
Angel Ibanez and
Stuart MacInnes. A fielding error by the UVU third baseman allowed McCarthy to score cutting the Wolverines lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Alex Carnall reached on a walk and then moved to third on a throwing error. McCarthy then followed with an RBI single to left field that allowed Carnall to score to make it 5-3 Utah Valley.
The Wolverines responded in the top of the fifth. An RBI double by Austin Heaps allowed Chris Benson, who led off with a single, to score from first. One out and a single later, Court Zollinger hit a three-run home run which extended Utah Valley's lead 9-3.
RBI singles by MacInnes and
Roger Bernal in the bottom of the sixth drove in a couple of runs and set up the bases loaded.
Iradier Hernandez drove in another run after being hit by the pitch which made the score 9-6 in favor of the Wolverines.
Kyle Beecher retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to give the Wolverines the 9-6 victory.
The Broncs (19-21, 8-11) grabbed the first lead of game two.
Alex Carnall led off with a walk and then stole second base.
Adrian De La Rosa followed with a single that put runners on the corners for
Mike McCarthy who then hit an RBI ground out that scored Carnall giving the Broncs the 1-0 lead.
Alex Exon gave the Wolverines (22-20, 14-1) the lead in the top of the fourth with a three-run home run off of
Hayden Daugherty (0-1). Utah Valley added another in the inning with an RBI bases loaded walk to Chris Benson that extended UVU's lead to 4-1.
In the top of the fifth, Utah Valley added to their lead with some help from the Broncs defense. A fielding error allowed Goose Kallunki to score making it 5-1 Wolverines.
Vincent Mejia reached in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out walk and then came around to score on an RBI double by
Stuart MacInnes.
Iradier Hernandez followed with an RBI single up the middle to cut the Utah Valley lead 5-3.
The Wolverines picked up an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Kallunki hit an RBI double to right center field that allowed Benson to score from second extending their lead to 6-3.
The Broncs picked up single runs in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by McCarthy that scored
Roger Bernal and another run in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch that allowed Kolten Van Komen to score from third which got UTPA within one at 6-5.
Ryan Chadwick pitched a perfect ninth to close out the ball game and give the Wolverines the 6-5 victory and the double-header sweep.
Texas Pan American and Utah Valley will wrap up their four-game series Sunday afternoon at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
