WACO, Texas- The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) volleyball team completed their play in the Baylor Classic Tournament with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-4, 25-14) loss to the Cowgirls of McNeese State Saturday evening at the Ferrell Center on the Baylor University campus.
The Cowgirls started the opening set with a 5-1 run with UTPA's Maria Kilefoth stopping it with a kill for the Broncs' second point. The Broncs pulled to within 11-8 after a block from Kliefoth. Later in the set
Diara Reynolds' kill once again made it a three-point match at 20-17. Nicole Bowden had a pair of kills and a block in the set ending 5-2 run to give the opening stanza to the Cowgirls.
The second set was all McNeese as the exploded on a set ending 19-1 run to win the second set 25-4.
In the final stanza, the Broncs found themselves in a hole again down 5-1 to start. After a Cowgirl attack error, the Broncs rallied to within three points at 11-8. The Cowgirls tallied five points in a row with a pair of Bowden kills increasing the lead to 16-8. The Cowgirls finished the set outscoring the Broncs 9-6 to win the set 25-15 and winning the match 3-0.
Michelle McNamee had a strong offensive effort for the Broncs with nine kills on 27 total attacks.
Krysta Freitas and Reynolds each added five kills apiece. Freitas and
Juri Franzen chipped in with eight digs each on defense.
Maegan Carlton paced the offense for McNeese State with nine kills. Becky Bekelja tallied seven kills along with a match high 25 assists and 11 digs defensively.
The Broncs will open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday evening when they play host to Big XII foe Texas Tech at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Start time for the match is 6:00 pm.
