Volleyball Falls in Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball dropped a non-conference match against the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders 3-0 on Tuesday at Dugan Wellness Center
 
Sophomore Michelle McNamee led the Broncs (9-13) in kills for the third-straight match, recording six. Junior Nycole Masaki had the team-high in assists with 12, and services aces with three.
 
Winners of seven in a row, the Islanders (16-6) were led by Brianna Brink, who had 10 kills, Logen Bourque, who had 30 assists, and Brooke Alverson, who seven of the Islanders' 14 service aces.
 
The Islanders jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after hitting .591 (13 kills on 22 attacks with no errors) to win the first set 25-12.
 
The second set was close early, as the Broncs found themselves within 11-9 after an attack error by Ivy Baresh, but a kill by Bourque was the first of five-straight points scored by the Islanders as they pulled away for a 25-17 victory.
 
The Broncs jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the third set thanks in part to a kill by McNamee and a pair of service aces by Masaki, but the Islanders responded with a 4-0 run to tie it up. The Broncs were within 12-11 a little later, but the Islanders scored five-straight point to go up 17-11 before winning 25-16.
 
The Broncs return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they host Great West Conference opponent Houston Baptist University at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
