Volleyball Falls to Houston Baptist

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Houston Baptist University Huskies 3-0 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The Broncs (9-14, 2-2 Great West Conference) were led by Maria Kliefoth, who had eight kills, and Michelle McNamee, who had seven. Nycole Masaki had 18 assists while Krysta Freitas had a match-high 18 digs.
 
The Broncs held the lead throughout the early portion of the first set. The Huskies (16-10, 4-1 GWC) tied it up for the first time at 9-9. Two points later, tied at 10-10, the Huskies went on an 11-4 run to pull away for a 25-19 victory.
 
The Broncs had the early lead in the second set as well, going up 6-4, but Caiti Wenger and Jasmine Casey combined for five kills to spark a 7-0 run that made it 11-6. After the Broncs got two back on a block by Sarah Davis and Nycole Masaki and an attack error by Casey, the Huskies scored five-straight as part of a 7-1 run take an 18-9 lead before winning 25-15.
 
The Huskies jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first set. The Broncs kept it close early, pulling within 11-9 on an attack error by Bailey Keith. The Huskies, however, scored the next six points en route to a 25-11 victory.
 
Wenger had a match-high 11 kills and a .588 hitting percentage. Victoria Weatherly had 36 assists and Heather Leaverton recorded 13 digs.
 
The Broncs return to action on Saturday, October 27, when they visit Utah Valley at 2:00 p.m.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
