OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 3-0 on Saturday at the UVU PE Building.
Diara Reynolds led the Broncs (9-15, 2-3 Great West Conference) with nine kills.
Nycole Masaki had 26 assists.
Krysta Freitas recorded a match-high 13 digs.
Sarah Davis posted a team-high three blocks.
The Wolverines (14-8, 5-1 GWC) got a match-high 10 kills from
Erica Nish, 31 assists from
Brookelyn Hall, 11 digs from
McKenna Tait, and a match-high eight blocks from
Lauren Stringham.
The first set was tight early. Down 10-8, the Broncs got a kill from
Haley Durham and a block from Freitas and Davis to tie the set. The Wolverines, however, responded by scoring five-straight points to start a 10-2 run that saw them go up 20-12. The Broncs followed that with a 7-2 run to make it close, but the Wolverines scored three of the final four points to win 25-20.
In the second set, the Wolverines jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but three kills by
Maria Kliefoth sparked a 6-3 run as the Broncs pulled within two. The Wolverines again created separation, going up 16-11 on a service ace by
Kalani Norris, but the Broncs scored the next four points to pull within one. A kill by
Katie Fritzler put the Wolverines up 19-15, but the Broncs again came back, getting within 20-19 and 21-20 before falling 25-20.
In the third set, the Wolverines took an early 9-2 lead. The Broncs pulled within three points three times, first at 15-12 and for the last time at 17-14, but that's as close as they got as the Wolverines went on to win 25-15.
The Broncs return to action on Monday at 8:00 p.m. when they visit Weber State.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
