Franzen Enters Top 10 in Career Digs as Volleyball Falls at Houston Baptist

HOUSTON – Senior Juri Franzen entered the top 10 in career digs in University of Texas-Pan American volleyball history in a 3-0 loss to the Houston Baptist University Huskies on Saturday at Sharp Gym.
 
Franzen recorded 16 digs to increase her career total to 948, passing Winker Cruz (933, 2000-04) for the No. 10 spot. Next up is Marie Velasquez (1993-96), who ranks ninth with 1,024 digs.
 
Diara Reynolds led the Broncs (10-18, 3-5 GWC) with eight kills while Nycole Masaki recorded 20 assists.
 
Caiti Wenger led the Huskies (19-10, 7-1 GWC) with a match-high 11 kills and a match-best .529 hitting percentage. Heather Leaverton recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. Victoria Weatherly had a match-high 37 assists.
 
Wenger had five kills, including three in a row at one points to power the Huskies to an 11-3 lead in the first set. The Broncs came back to get as close as four at 23-19 after a Leaverton service error, but the Huskies won 25-19.
 
The Broncs led 2-0 in the second set after a kill by Reynolds, and the Broncs were within 7-6 after a block by Michelle McNamee and Haley Durham, but the Huskies outscored the Broncs 18-6 over the rest of the set to win 25-12.
 
The third set was tight most of the way. The Broncs led 17-16 after a bad set by Jasmine Casey. Leaverton responded with two kills to put the Huskies on top, but a block by Krysta Freitas and Maria Kliefoth tied the set up at 18-18. The Huskies scored the final seven points to win 25-18.
 
The third-seeded Broncs open up the Great West Conference Tournament in the semifinals against second-seeded and host Utah Valley University on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
