Torre Becomes Program Leader in Assists in Loss to Northwestern State

Box Score

HOUSTON – Harlingen-native and senior guard Bianca Torre broke the University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball program record for career assists in a 63-53 loss to the Northwestern State University Lady Demons in the opening game of the David Jones Classic, hosted by the University of Houston, on Friday at Hofheinz Pavilion.

Torre's first assist came on a Ce'Monay Newell three-pointer with 8:40 remaining in the first half, breaking a tie with Alexis Williams (328, 1997-2001) for first place. Torre finished with two assists, upping her career total to 330. Torre is now the Broncs' (2-4) all-time leader in three categories (points, assists and free throws made) while ranking in the top five of eight other categories (steals, field goals made, field goals attempted, three-pointers made, three-pointers attempted, three-point field goal percentage, free throws attempted and free throw percentage).

Two Broncs reached double-figures in scoring, led by Cassandra Moody, who scored a career-high 12 points on a career-best 6-of-9 shooting to go with a career-high tying two blocks and a career-high two steals. KaeLynn Boyd scored 11 points with four rebounds and two steals.

Three Lady Demons reached double-figures, led by Keisha Lee, who scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Jasmine Upchurch scored 14 points with a game-high eight rebounds while Janelle Perez scored 12 points with a game-high four assists.

The Broncs had the early lead as a Moody jumper made it 2-0 and then another Moody jumper made it 4-2. The Lady Demons took their first lead on a jumper by Perez with 16:12 remaining in the first half, and they never relinquished it.

The Broncs kept it close for most of the game. After going down 30-20 late in the first half, Moody and Boyd combined for nine of the final 11 points of the half to bring the Broncs within three.

The Broncs got as close as one at 45-44 after a Newell jumper, assisted by Torre, with 10:12 remaining in the second half, but a 7-0 Lady Demons run that lasted nearly six minutes put the game out of reach.

The Broncs conclude the David Jones Classic when they face Southeast Missouri State on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
