Torre Breaks Program Scoring Record as Women's Basketball Opens Season with Loss at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – Harlingen-native Bianca Torre broke the 10-year old University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball program scoring record as the Broncs fell to the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners 68-34 on Friday at the Convocation Center.
 
Torre broke the record with a jumper from the top of the key with 19:11 remaining in the first half. She finished with two points, upping her career total to 1,228. Alex Gravel (1998-2003) was the previous record holder with 1,227 points.
 
After that basket, the Roadrunners (1-0) went on a 20-3 run to go up 22-5 with 8:16 remaining in the first half. Ce'Monay Newell broke the drought for the Broncs (0-1) with back-to-back three pointers to make it 22-11. Starting with those baskets, the Broncs outscored the Roadrunners 15-10 over the final 7:16 of the half to pull within 32-20.
 
Newell led all scorers with12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
 
The Roadrunners opened the second half on an 18-5 run to push their lead to 50-25 and put the game out of reach.
 
Twelve of the 14 Roadrunners who played scored, led by Kamra King, who scored 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting.
 
The Broncs kick-off a three-game home stand on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. when they host Our Lady of the Lake University. There will be a special pre-game ceremony to honor Torre. It's also Veterans Appreciation Day. Any fans showing a military ID will get in for free. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive a free bag of popcorn while the first 100 kids in attendance will receive a free hot dog.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
