Hot Overtime Shooting Leads Broncs to Win Over Hornets

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team hit all five of their field goal attempts and three of their four throw attempts in overtime to beat the Alabama State University Hornets 77-70 in their final game of the Tulane Classic on Thursday at Devlin Fieldhouse.
 
The Broncs (5-8) trailed 50-45 with just over four minutes remaining when Justin Leathers hit a jumper that was followed by a pair of baskets by Ruben Cabrera, a three-pointer by Aaron Urbanus and two free throws by Brandon Provost to fuel an 11-0 run that made it 56-50 with 43 seconds remaining.
 
After the teams traded free throws, Bobby Brown hit a three-pointer to make it 58-57 with 18 seconds left. The Broncs and Hornets (1-11) again traded free throws, and Brown again hit a three, this time with three seconds left, to tie the game at 62-62 and force overtime.
 
Cabrera hit a jumper on the Broncs' first possession in overtime and Urbanus sunk a layup on their second possession. Leathers came up with a dunk on their third possession while Provost nailed a three on their fourth possession that made it 71-66 with 2:08 remaining. Jamal Dantzler hit a layup and Provost went 3-for-4 from the line to put the game on ice.
 
Provost led all scorers with 25 points, increasing his career total to 985 and putting him in striking distance of becoming the 23rd player in program history to join the 1,000 points club. Provost hit four three-pointers and went a season-high 11-of-14 from the line while recording seven rebounds and six assists. Urbanus scored a season-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-9 from behind the arc, to go with five rebounds and three assists. Cabrera scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting with four rebounds, two blocks and one steal.
 
Joshua Freelove led the Hornets with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Brown scored 11 points and Jamel Waters scored 10 points with seven assists. Stephawn Brown recorded a game-high 13 rebounds (seven offensive).
 
The Broncs posted their second-best three-point shooting game of the season, going 11-for-19 (57.9 percent). The Broncs held the Hornets 5-for-18 (27.8 percent) from behind the arc, marking the third lowest three-point shooting percentage by an opponent this season.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. when they host the University of Nebraska Omaha at the UTPA Fieldhouse. One lucky fan will have the opportunity to win $1,000 dollars, courtesy of Rio Bank. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive free popcorn. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
