EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team held the Texas Southern University Tigers without a field goal in the first seven and a half minutes of the game to set the tone for a 65-46 victory on Friday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs (5-6) held the Tigers (2-7) to 18.2 percent shooting in the first half (4-for-22) and 36.7 percent (11-for-30) overall. Additionally, the Broncs held the Tigers to 7.4 percent (2-for-27) shooting from behind the arc.
The Broncs shot 52 percent (26-for-50) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-for-13) from behind the arc.
Sophomore
Jasmine Thompson hit her first nine shots from the field and finished 10-for-12 to lead the Broncs with a career-high 21 points while tying her career-high with seven rebounds for the second game in a row. Senior
Ce'Monay Newell hit three three-pointers for the second-straight game, finishing with 11 points.
Kayla West led the Tigers with 14 points, seven of which came from the foul line.
Morgan Simmons scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting while recording 10 rebounds and four blocks for the double-double.
Down 2-0 early, Thompson hit a field goal to tie the game and spark the Broncs on a 16-3 run, capped by a Thompson layup that made it 16-5 with 13:36 remaining in the first half.
The Broncs went up by as many as 18 in the first half, at 30-12 on a jumper by Thompson with 5:35 remaining. The Tigers closed the half on an 8-2 run to pull within 12.
The Broncs went up by 15 at 40-25 on a Thompson jumper two and a half minutes into the second half, but a pair of layups by
Gianne Fleming sparked a 6-0 run that saw the Tigers pull to within nine. The Tigers were within 44-35 with 12:34 remaining, but a Newell three-pointer sparked a 13-2 run to make it 57-37 and put the game out of reach.
The Broncs return to action with the start of a six-game road trip on Saturday, December 22 at 2:00 p.m. when they visit TCU.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the Great West Conference in 12 sports since 2009-10. Men's golf competes in the America Sky Conference while men's tennis competes in the Southland Conference.
