ARLINGTON, Texas – Sophomore
Diara Reynolds had a career-high 12 kills, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks 3-1 at the UTA Hilton Invitational on Saturday at College Park Center.
With the match tied at 1-1, Reynolds had four of her kills in the third set, including three during a 5-1 run to bring the Broncs (0-2) from down 17-13 to an 18-18 tie. The Mavericks (2-0), however, scored the final seven points, thanks in part to three kills by
Taylor Gross, to win 25-18.
The Mavericks rode their momentum to a 14-7 fourth set lead, but the Broncs went on a 17-8 run to reach set point at 24-22. The Mavericks scored four-straight points to win the set 26-24.
The Mavericks jumped out to a quick start by hitting .357 (14-4-28) in the first set to take it 25-10.
Amanda Welsh had 10 of the Mavericks 12 assists while
Shelby Dickinson and
Ashley Bennett combined for nine kills.
Dickinson had a match-high 14 kills to go with 15 digs for the double-double. Gross had 11 kills and Bennett had 10.
In the second set, freshman
Haley Durham helped the Broncs jump out to a 6-1 lead with two kills and one block. Durham had four kills and two service aces in the set as the Broncs went on to win 25-12.
Durham finished with eight kills, one assist, two aces and four blocks. Junior
Nycole Masaki had her second-straight 38-assist match, to go with six digs, three kills and two blocks. Senior
Ijanae Holman had a career-high 19 digs.
The Broncs return to action against Savannah State at 4:30.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the all-sports division of the Great West Conference since 2009-10.
