Volleyball Falls at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite playing two very competitive sets, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Texas Tech University Red Raiders 3-0 to open the Lone Star Showdown Presented by Under Armour on Friday at United Spirit Arena.
 
The Broncs (1-4) were down 12-6 early in the first set, but went on a 6-1 run to pull within 13-12. After a timeout, the Red Raiders (5-0) scored five-straight points to pull away en route to a 25-21 win.
 
Down 2-0 in the match, the Broncs had an 11-10 lead in the third set. The Red Raiders scored eight-straight points to take an 18-11 lead, but the Broncs came back to within two at 22-20, 23-21 and 24-22 before falling 25-22.
 
In the second set, the Red Raiders opened up with a 6-0 lead and then went up 14-4. The Broncs used a 5-0 run to pull within five, but the Red Raiders scored three of the next four points before winning 25-14.
 
Freshman Haley Durham led the Broncs with eight kills while committing just two errors in 14 attacks for a.429 hitting percentage. Junior Nycole Masaki led the Broncs with 22 assists while Juri Franzen had a team-high 11 digs.
 
The only player on either team to reach double-figures in kills was Emily Ehrle, who led the Red Raiders with 10. Emily Ruetter had a match-high 35 assists while Rachel Brummitt had a match-high 12 digs.
 
The Broncs continue the tournament against Northwestern State at 4:00.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the all-sports division of the Great West Conference since 2009-10.
