Volleyball Falls to Northwestern State

LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Northwestern State University Lady Demons 3-0 in the Lone Star Showdown Presented by Under Armour on Friday at United Spirit Arena.
 
The Broncs (1-5) had their best opportunity to take a set in the third, as there were 15 ties and eight lead changes before the Lady Demons (2-3) won it 25-20. The Broncs had a 17-15 lead, but three kills by Caiti O'Connell helped the Lady Demons score six-straight points to go ahead for good.
 
O'Connell and Kelly Jimenez, who was serving at the time, tied for the match-high with 14 kills each. O'Connell did so while making only one error in 21 attacks for a .619 hitting percentage. Emily Sweat had a match-high 41 assists while Keelie Arnerson led the way with 18 digs.
 
The Broncs were led by sophomore Krysta Freitas and freshman Haley Durham, who had seven kills each. Junior Nycole Masaki had 19 assists while senior Juri Franzen recorded nine digs.
 
The Broncs scored the first point of the match on a kill by Freitas. The Lady Demons scored the next two points to take the lead, but the set remained close early as the Broncs were within 9-8 before falling 25-13.
 
The Lady Demons jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second set en route to a 25-11 win.
 
The Broncs conclude the tournament when they face San Jose State on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the all-sports division of the Great West Conference since 2009-10.
