LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team finished off the Lone Star Showdown presented by Under Armour with a 3-0 loss to the San Jose State University Spartans on Saturday at United Spirit Arena.
The Broncs (1-6) challenged the Spartans (4-1) in the first set. After falling behind early, UTPA tied the set at six with a kill by
Ijanae Holman. San Jose State then went on an 8-4 run to take the 14-10 lead. Later in the set, a kill by
Krysta Freitas got the Broncs within two at 22-20 before the Spartans closed out the set 25-23.
In the second set, the Broncs took the early 5-3 lead after an ace by
Haley Durham but the Spartans tied it at eight on a kill by Krista Miller. After San Jose State took the lead, Durham got UTPA within two with a kill that made it 12-10. The Spartans closed out the set with a 13-6 run taking the second set 25-16.
UTPA fell behind in the third set 3-0 before
Sarah Davis got the Broncs on the board with a kill. Later in the set a kill by Freitas cut the Spartans lead in half 12-6 but the Spartans took the final set 25-17.
The Broncs were led by
Krysta Freitas who recorded nine kills and seven digs while
Michelle McNamee added nine digs and six kills.
Nycole Masaki led the way with 24 assists and added six digs.
Juri Franzen paced the defense with 14 digs.
Hanah Blume and Krista Miller led the way for the Spartans as they each recorded a double-double. Blume recorded 11 kills and 12 digs while Miller had 15 kills and 10 digs.
The Broncs return to action on Friday at 9:00 a.m. against Louisiana Tech in their first of four matches in two days at the 2012 Southeastern Lion Classic.
