EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team recorded a season-high 14 aces to breeze past the Texas Southern University Tigers 3-0 on Friday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

Michelle McNamee led the Broncs (3-9) with a career-high five aces.

Krysta Frietas recorded a match-high 10 kills without committing an error for a match-best .588 hitting percentage. Four other Broncs had at least six kills, as McNamee had nine, sophomore

Up 2-0 in the match, the Broncs jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the third set. After an attack error put the Tigers (4-7) on the board, the Broncs scored eight straight to go ahead 16-1. That run included five serves by freshman and San Benito-native
Kasey Sanchez, who recorded her second-career ace. The Broncs went on to win the set 25-9.
The Tigers were within 9-8 in the first set after a kill by
Precious Spencer, but the Broncs responded with a 7-2 run to pull away before winning 25-14.
The Broncs took a quick 3-0 lead in the second set, but the Tigers scored five-straight to take the lead. The Broncs responded with a 6-0 run to take the lead back for good before winning 25-15.
The Broncs conclude this home stand against the defending NAIA National Champion and top-ranked University of Texas at Brownsville on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Doors open at 4:00.
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the all-sports division of the Great West Conference since 2009-10.
