Volleyball Sweeps Southern

HAMMOND, Louisiana – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team led throughout each of the first two sets en route to a 3-0 victory over the Southern University Jaguars in their third match of the 2012 Tangi Tourism Lion Classic on Saturday at the University Center on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University.
 
After the Broncs (2-8) jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first set, the Jaguars (0-8) kept it close over the next few points, pulling within 9-8 on an attack error by Diara Reynolds. After that, however, the Broncs scored 11-straight points, 10 of which came on Nycole Masaki's serve, to build a 20-8 lead before winning 25-10. Reynolds and Maria Kliefoth had two kills each during the run, and Masaki added an ace. Kliefoth had three of her seven kills during the set to go with one ace. Masaki finished the set with two of her match-high four aces.
 
The Broncs jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set thanks in part to two kills by Krysta Freitas. Another Freitas kill made it 11-4, but Marisol Macais recorded a pair of kills as the Jaguars scored five-straight points to pull within 11-9. The Broncs responded with five-straight of their own to pull away before winning 25-16.
 
The Jaguars scored the first two points of the third set to take their first lead of the match, keeping the lead until a pair of Reynolds kills put the Broncs on top at 8-7. The Broncs extended their lead to 13-7, and were up 19-14 a little later, but the Jaguars came back towards the end. With the Broncs serving match point at 24-22, Chanda Journet and Amber Shelby came up with kills to tie the set. Michelle McNamee responded with back-to-back kills to give the Broncs a 26-24 win. McNamee had four of her seven kills in the third set. She also finished with 13 digs.
 
Freitas led the Broncs with eight kills. Masaki had a match-high 27 assists. Franzen recorded a match-high 18 digs. Kliefoth had a match-high three blocks.
 
The Jaguars were led by Beasley, who posted a match-high nine kills. Journet led the Jaguars with 17 assists while Michelle Williams had a team-high 15 digs.
 
The Broncs return to action at 12:00 p.m. against Weber State University.
 
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics competes at the NCAA Division I level. UTPA, formerly known as Pan American College and Pan American University, is a part of the University of Texas System of Schools. The Broncs compete in 14 varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross country, along with women's volleyball and men's baseball. The Broncs have won six team national championships, including the 1963 NAIA Championship in men's basketball and every NAIA Championship in men's tennis from 1961 through 1965. The Broncs also have also won 10 individual national championships, all in men's tennis, with six NAIA doubles championships and four NAIA singles championships. UTPA has been a member of the all-sports division of the Great West Conference since 2009-10.
