Newell's Big Day Not Enough as Women's Basketball Falls at NJIT

NEWARK, New Jersey – Senior guard Ce'Monay Newell gave the Broncs the lead four times and tied the game twice, but the University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team fell to the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders 60-55 on Saturday at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.
 
Newell hit her first of six three-pointers with 2:59 remaining in the first half to cap a 13-4 run and make it 22-21 Broncs (5-12, 0-2 Great West Conference).
 
After the Highlanders (8-11, 1-0 GWC) scored seven-straight points, the Broncs went on a 7-0 run of their own, capped by a Newell three-pointer to make it 29-28 Broncs early in the second half.
 
Newell's next three-pointer gave the Bronc a 34-32 lead with 16:43 remaining. Five minutes later, she hit two free throws, tying the game and then giving the Broncs a 43-42 lead.
 
The Highlanders responded with an 8-0 run to take a 50-43 lead that they did not relinquish.
 
Overall, Newell scored a season-high 20 points on a season-best 6-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. Sophomore Jasmine Thompson also had a big game, recording a career-high 12 rebounds (four offensive) to go with eight points, three assists and one block.
 
Alyssa Albanese led four Highlanders in double-figures scoring with 18 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals. Denisa Domiterova scored 15 points while Melanie Griffin and Uju Nwankwo scored 11 points each.
 
The Broncs play seven of their final 10 regular season games at home, starting on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Huston-Tillotson at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive free popcorn. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
