Five Broncs Reach Double-Figures in Win at New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Five Broncs reached double-figures in scoring and Harlingen-native Bianca Torre (Harlingen South High School) tied the program record for career steals as the University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team beat the University of New Orleans Privateers 71-56 on Saturday at Lakefront Arena.
 
The Broncs (8-12) are now winners of three in a row.
 
Torre recorded two steals to increase her career total to 212, tying Cheveron Terry (1997-2001) for the most in program history. Torre also scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc, to go with a season-high seven assists.
 
Freshman KaeLynn Boyd led the Broncs with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, to go with five rebounds. Freshman Joyea Marshall recorded her second double-double in three games with 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting and a career-high 16 rebounds. Senior Franchesca Simon scored a season-high 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc. Senior Cassandra Moody also scored 11 points, hitting 4-of-5 shots, while recording five rebounds.
 
The Privateers (1-17) jumped out to an 11-6 lead, but the Broncs used three-pointers by Torre and Boyd to power an 11-0 run that saw them go up 17-11.
 
The Broncs held the Privateers 0-for-11 from the field from the 16:00 mark until the 4:26 mark while building a 26-19 lead. All eight of the Privateers' points during that stretch came on free throws.
 
The Broncs led by 15 in the opening minutes of the second half, but Keri Thomas hit a three-pointer and two free throws, followed by a Mirjam Sipos jumper to bring the Privateers within 46-38 with 14:08 to go. The Broncs responded with an 8-0 run to go up 54-38 and put the game out of reach.
 
Thomas led all scorers with 23 points.
 
The Broncs shot .483 (28-for-58) from the field and .444 (8-for-18) from behind the arc while holding the Privateers to .333 (19-for-57) from the field and .158 (3-for-19) from behind the arc.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. when they host the New Jersey Institute of Technology at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive free popcorn. It's the first game of a single-admission double-header, as the men's basketball team faces Chicago State at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.
