HOUSTON – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team fell to the No. 54 Rice University Owls 0-7 on Sunday after playing doubles and starting singles at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium and finishing at the Downtown Club at the MET due to rain.
 
The Broncs (0-2) and Owls (2-2) locked up in a competitive doubles point at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium right off the bat. The Owls took the first match as Adam Gustafsson and Tommy Bennett beat Thomas-Orestis Panoulas and Victor Alves 8-4 at No. 2, but Sebastien Job and Alejandro Sanoja, bumped up the No. 1 spot after playing at No. 2 in the Broncs' last match, responded with an 8-6 victory over Jonathan Chang and Peter Frank. It came down to the No. 3 match to determine the point, and the team of Chetan Panditi and Felix Hasselberg, who was making his dual debut and teaming with Panditi for the first time, played Philipp Seifert and Gustavo Gonzalez tough before falling 7-8 to make it 1-0 Owls.
 
About half an hour after beginning singles, rain rolled in and suspended the match as the Broncs and Owls relocated to the Downtown Club at the MET.
 
Panditi and Alves played a pair of tight first sets at No. 2 and No. 4, but each fell 5-7 to Frank and Seifert respectively. Panditi dropped the second set 3-6 and Alves lost his second set 0-6. The Broncs dropped the other four singles matches in straight sets.
 
This Broncs return home on Friday at 4:00 p.m. for their home opener at the newly renovated Orville Cox Tennis Center when they host Laredo Community College, the No. 7 ranked team among junior colleges. Admission is free.
