OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team opened their final season in the Great West Conference with a 71-66 overtime loss to the Utah Valley University Wolverines on Saturday at the UCCU Center.
Freshman guard
KaeLynn Boyd led the Broncs (5-10, 0-1 GWC) with 18 points while hitting a career-high three three-pointers and dishing out a career-high eight assists to go with three steals in a career-high 39 minutes. Senior guard
Johnondra Patterson scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting with nine rebounds. Freshman forward
Joyea Marshall and senior forward
Cassandra Moody led the Broncs with 11 rebounds (four offensive) each as the Broncs out-rebounded the Wolverines 49-48.
Sammie Jensen led the Wolverines (6-11, 1-0 GWC) with a double-double, scoring 21 points with 14 rebounds (four offensive).
Whitney Jenkins scored 12 points while
Taylor Huber and
Tina Doughty scored 11 points each.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 7-1 lead. The Broncs got within 9-8, but the Wolverines extended their lead back to 16-10. Patterson hit a jumper with 9:55 remaining in the first half as the Broncs scored 10-straight points to kick-off a 14-2 run that saw them take a 24-18 lead on another Patterson jumper four minutes later.
The Broncs led by as many as seven twice in the first half, including at 32-25 after a
Ce'Monay Newell three-pointer at the 2:50 mark, but two free throws by Jensen, a layup by Huber, a three-pointer by Doughty and a layup by
Sam Loggins allowed the Wolverines to close the half on a 9-0 run to take a 34-32 lead.
Jenkins hit two three-pointers, a jumper and a pair of free throws to help the Wolverines take a 44-38 lead in the opening three minutes of the second half.
Down 47-41, Boyd nailed a three-pointer to spark an 8-2 run that allowed the Broncs to tie the game at 49-49 on a Newell three-pointer with 11:57 left.
The game stayed tight from there, with neither team leading by more than four, and the game staying within one possession for the final 8:39 of regulation. The Broncs took a 63-61 lead with 17 seconds to go on a
Jasmine Thompson layup, but Jenkins connected on a layup with 2.5 seconds left to force overtime.
The Broncs were within 66-65 with 4:25 remaining after a Thompson jumper, but the Wolverines scored the final five points on a
Cydne Gray layup and three free throws, two by Jensen and one by Gray, to seal the victory.
The Broncs return to action on Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. when they visit future WAC-opponent CSU Bakersfield.
