Broncs Open Great West Conference Play with Win at Houston Baptist

HOUSTON – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team opened their final season of Great West Conference play before joining the WAC with a 70-60 victory over the Houston Baptist University Huskies on Tuesday at Sharp Gym.
 
Five Broncs (8-10, 1-0 GWC) reached double-figures in scoring for the first time this season, led by Jesus Delgado who scored 15 points while hitting a season-high seven free throws. Ruben Cabrera scored a season-high tying 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting while Aaron Urbanus scored 12 points, Brandon Provost scored 11 and Justin Leathers scored 10.
 
The Broncs shot .489 (22-for-45) from the field, including .556 (5-for-9) from behind the arc.
 
The Broncs trailed by as many as 13 twice in the first half, including 30-17 after an Art Bernardi jumper with 4:08 to go capped a 15-4 run. Urbanus scored five points as the Broncs closed the half on a 9-2 run to pull within 32-26.
 
Delgado hit a jumper and a layup and Leathers nailed a three-pointer in the first two minutes of the second half to extend the Broncs' run to 16-2 and give them their first lead at 33-32.
 
The Broncs created space for the first time when, down 42-41 with under 14:05 left, Cabrera hit his second and third baskets in a row, Shaquille Hines made a layup and Urbanus hit a three to make it 50-42. After a James Harper free throw got the Huskies (4-11, 0-1 GWC) back on the board, Lauri Toivonen hit two free throws, Provost made a three-pointer and Cabrera knocked down a jumper to cap the run at 16-1 and make it 57-43 Broncs with 6:39 remaining.
 
Marcel Smith led the Huskies with 14 points. Harped scored 11 points while Caleb Crayton finished with 10 points.
 
The Huskies shot .408 (20-for-49) from the field, including .357 (5-for-14) from behind the arc.
 
The Broncs play eight of their final 13 games at home, starting on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. when they host Fisher College at the UTPA Fieldhouse. One lucky fan will have the opportunity to win $1,000 dollars, courtesy of Rio Bank. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive free popcorn. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
